The protocol to getting a maori tribal tattoos?

Is there a protocol that goes to getting a tattoo, like a tribal tattoo. I was told there has to be a story to this type of tattoo. I do know family geneology is a blessed protocol. I would like to get a small tribal tattoo.I have always been fascinated by the tattoo designs...awesome. I do have alot of respect for the maori culture.
